OMAHA CROWNED MIDWEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

by Joseph Reina

The Kings are crowned the Midwest Conference Champions over the Wichita Wings as they move on to the MASL2 semifinals, after an intense 8-7 overtime win.

Omaha and Wichita met twice during this year’s regular season with the Wings emerging victorious on both occasions, but not this time. In the Midwest Division Playoffs, Wichita played host to the Kings, where the Wings were the ones who came up short.  Midfielder Leo Mejia found the back of the net with just under three minutes remaining in overtime, causing an explosion of excitement for the Kings and their traveling fans.

The Kings trailed for the entire first quarter and for half of the second before Pedro Augusto leveled the score at 3-3 going into halftime. After the break, Bobby Jaffery scored twice as the Kings took their turn to control the game. Omaha would lead from that point on until David Lucio tied the game at 7-7 with just 46 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Wichita and Omaha exchanged opportunities for seven minutes before Pedro Augusto collected a loose ball in his own half and took it the length of the field before laying it off for Leo Mejia who rifled home the golden goal and his third on the day to send the Kings to Michigan.

Next up for the Kings will be a trip to Muskegon, Michigan for the MASL2 semifinals on April 8th. Match times and their opponent will be announced at a later date. Follow the Omaha Kings on  Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates on game location and time.
